STOP TWELVE: Interurban Train
Knox Alley
Welcome to Stop 12 of the Rails, Bales and Bluebonnet Trails historic downtown Ennis walking tour. The inaugural trip celebrating the arrival of the Interurban transit system made this intersection the new business and social center of Ennis. By the 1920s Ennis was certainly up to speed with American popular culture of shopping, mass transit and movies. But the transportation revolution was just starting; and the automobile garage next to the interurban station provided parking for 48 cars. Today it houses the Ennis auction house. Two more garages were around the corner in the 200 block of Knox Street. The automobile changed the location of Ennis businesses in the next generation as both customers and stores spread out across the landscape.
